VA computer goes missing with DC info

A number of doctors across the county recently received a letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs about possible fraud and the potential for identity theft.

The letter, sent by VISN 7 Network Director Lawrence Biro, warns doctors that a computer hard drive has gone missing in Birmingham, Ala.  This hard drive contained a file, obtained from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, which listed personal information of doctors — such as the Unique Physician Identification Number (UPIN), date of birth, state license numbers, business addresses, and employer identification numbers (EIN).

The apparent theft raises the possibility of identify theft. Doctors who received the letter are advised to take the steps recommended by the VA.
