California chiropractors work together to resolve legislation issues

The California Chiropractic Association (CCA), the International Chiropractors Association of California (ICAC), and the four chiropractic colleges located in California have joined together to resolve issues related to proposed legislation in the California Assembly.

The legislation, SB 801 and AB 1137, are designed to put the Board of Chiropractic Examiners under the California Department of Consumer Affairs and, according to a CCA position statement, would allow the legislature to “amend any section of the [Chiropractic] Act, including provisions related to the chiropractic scope of practice.”

The organizations are opposed to the bills; however, a press release from the CCA said, “It is highly unlikely that we can defeat these bills. At best, we can only defer this fight to another time. If this was a one-time, isolated attack on chiropractic, the decision to attempt to defeat the legislation at all costs would be a simple one to make. However, this issue is certain to be revisited, if not next year, then in the next round of sunset review hearings.”

The Board of Examiners has been in the news for the past several months because of the firing of its executive director, the appointment of members by the governor, and alleged conflicts of interest by its consultant.

The four chiropractic colleges in California are Palmer College of Chiropractic West, Life College of Chiropractic West, Cleveland College of Chiropractic, and Southern California University of Health Sciences.
