CERV receives nonprofit status

The Chiropractic Emergency Response Volunteer (CERV) team, established after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, has received nonprofit status.

The nonprofit status — 501(c)(3) — allows individuals and corporations to make tax-deductible donations to the organization.

Prior to the creation of CERV, chiropractors had no official standing in emergency-response teams. In the aftermath of the 2005 hurricanes, Rebecca Burton, DC, a Dallas-area chiropractor, enlisted the help of Zonsite LLC., a Dallas wellness and marketing technology company, to recruit more than 100 DCs and 12 suppliers to help volunteers and victims who fled to Dallas.

Following this volunteer effort, Zonsite helped form CERV. By 2006, CERV was recognized by the Department of Homeland Security and officially became part of the Dallas County Disaster Management Operations Center (DMOC) and a part of the Medical Reserve Corp (MRC) as a stand-alone unit.

Membership into CERV is open to all chiropractors. For more information, go to www.ihelpcerv.org.
