Colorado medical-claims review bill falters in committee

Colorado chiropractors and physical therapists went head-to-head with insurers over House Bill 1084 which would have set parameters on the kind of people auto insurers could hire to review claims for medical payments coverage.

The goal: Reduce the number of claims that are wrongfully denied, which delays people getting the care they need, said Rep. Ray Rose, R-Montrose who sponsored the bill.

Under 1084, if it were a chiropractic claim, for example, a licensed chiropractor would have to review the claim. The review would have to be done by someone in Colorado who didn’t have a financial interest in whether the claim were approved or denied. And there would have to be an exam of the patient, not a paper review.

Insurers opposed the bill, saying it would add unnecessary cost to the system because there is already a way to appeal denied claims.

The House Business Affairs and Labor Committee voted against moving the bill forward.
