CCRC seeks patients for studies

Officials at the Cleveland Chiropractic Research Center (CCRC) are seeking participants for three research studies that will begin in late February and in March.

“We’re very excited about the work we’re doing here,” Cheryl Hawk, DC, PhD, the college’s vice president of research and scholarship said. “The studies we’re conducting are multifaceted and represent Cleveland Chiropractic College’s strong commitment to research and its ongoing quest to advance the profession for future generations of chiropractors and chiropractic patients.”

The “Shoe Study” seeks patients ages 18 to 45 and moderately overweight with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 to 33. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two walking groups with each group using a different type of walking shoe. No treatment is included and it will not interfere with the patient’s regular chiropractic care. Free walking shoes will be given to those who participate.

The “Balance Pilot Study” is open to patients aged 65 or older who are able to stand on one leg for only five seconds or less. Also, they must not have had chiropractic care for three months previous. Participants will be assigned to one of three study groups, two of which include short- to long-term chiropractic care and one of which includes exercise in lieu of chiropractic care. Licensed DC faculty of the College will administer chiropractic care, and all exams are free. Patients will be asked to return for two-, six- and 12-month assessments and will receive $25 at each visit to cover time and travel.

Finally, the “Chronic Pain Study” will provide all participants with four weeks of free chiropractic care administered by licensed DC faculty. Eligible patients must be aged 60 or older and suffer from spine-related back or neck pain that has been present for at least three months. Also, patients of this study must not have had any chiropractic care during the previous month.

For more information on these studies, contact Research Assistant Emily Culver via e-mail at emily.culver@cleveland.edu or by telephone at 816-501-0146.
