Doctors want family involvement

A poll run by Medscape (www.medscape.com) indicates that the majority of doctors prefer family members to be involved in patient care.

The survey — directed toward medical doctors — asked, “Given a choice, as a clinician, would you rather your patients’ families were “involved” in (asking questions, pointing out changes in status) or “accepting” of (rarely asking questions, assuming the clinician knows best) the care their relatives receive?

More than 70 percent of respondents in this nonscientific poll indicated they wanted involvement and about 3 percent said “accepting. The rest said it depended upon the individual case.
