NIH researchers jump ship because of ethics policies

Approximately 40 percent of scientific researchers are seeking other employment or are planning to do so because of the government’s new ethics rules.

According to an Associated Press article, a survey of researchers at the National Institutes of Health says that the NIH ethics crackdown is too severe and curtails scientists’ ability to earn outside income.

Respondents also believe the rules, which were enacted last year after NIH found that dozens of scientists had run afoul of existing restrictions with private consulting deals with drug and biotechnology companies, will restrict the agency’s ability to recruit employees.
