Wolfe-Harris Center receives grant

The Wolfe-Harris Center for Clinical Studies (WHCCS) at Northwestern Health Sciences University received a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources, and Services Administration (HRSA).

The grant is for a three-year randomized clinical trial comparing two approaches for the treatment of low back pain. The first approach will include evidence-based, individualized care delivered by chiropractic physicians. The second approach involves an integrative healthcare team that will provide coordinated, individualized treatment including chiropractic, acupuncture and Oriental medicine, massage therapy, medical care, exercise, behavioral therapy, and self-care education.

Two hundred volunteers suffering from chronic low back pain will be enrolled in the study. Patients will be randomly assigned to 12 weeks of either chiropractic care or multidisciplinary, integrative care by a team of clinicians from various disciplines.
