CCGPP main focus of annual COCSA meeting

The Council on Chiropractic Guidelines and Practice Parameters (CCGPP) document on low-back pain took center stage with more than eight hours of debate at the annual meeting of the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA), in Baltimore November 9-11, 2006.

According to Janet Jordan, COCSA executive director, COCSA membership included that CCGPP:

  • Consider written recommendations for revisions;
  • Change the name of the document to reflect its real intent and use;
  • Ensure expanded input to allow elected CCGPP representatives to act as liaisons between the member associations and the CCGPP board;
  • Consider redrafting the low-back document’s overview and introduction to make it easier to read and understand, with a shorter narrative written in nonacademic language;
  • Include other organizations and researchers in the process;
  • Consider rewriting the research compilation to make it more user-friendly to those affected;
  • Advertise the commentary process well in advance to engage all stakeholders; and
  • Consider the use of clinical experience and case and course studies in the absence of higher levels of evidence and research.

CCGPP unanimously agreed to “resubmit the low-back draft to stakeholders for comment on the ‘user-friendly’ status.” CCGPP said that the chiropractic profession, as well as all other stakeholders, will receive 45 days notice before release of this new draft and will be given an additional 45 days to respond to the draft when it is released.

More than 120 delegates from 50 state associations attended the annual meeting, said Jordan.

According to information on CCGPP’s Web site, the CCGPP is a steering organization comprised of 20 individuals: 16 are chiropractors, with one in education, one in research and 14 in full-time private practice. There is a vendor representative, a representative from the chiropractic colleges, and attorneys representing the National Association of Chiropractic Attorneys. A research commission with several dozen members reports to and is supervised by CCGPP.”

The organizations that formed CCGPP include the American Chiropractic Association, the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, the Council on Chiropractic Education, the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards, the Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Sciences, the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research, the International Chiropractors Association, the National Association of Chiropractic Attorneys, and the National Institute for Chiropractic Research.

OTHER BUSINESS

In other business at the annual meeting, COCSA leaders reviewed the successes of the past year, including:

  • Introduction of World Class Conferencing,
  • Support of CERV (Chiropractic Emergency Response Volunteers) Team,
  • National Backpack Safety Program, and
  • The development of a smoking cessation program.

Yolanda Davis of Foot Levelers, Inc. presented COCSA leaders Drs. Steve Simonetti and Jerry DeGrado with a check for $14,250. The money came from state association use of Foot Levelers Speakers Grant Program. NCMIC, Eclipse/Chiromatic, and TPK Backsaver Wallet also presented checks to the organization.

NEW MISSION AND LEADERS

Membership also approved new mission and vision statements. The new mission of COCSA is “to provide an open, nonpartisan forum for the advancement of the chiropractic profession through service to member state associations.”
