Two more state associations to merge
Two more state chiropractic associations are close to uniting into one. The Michigan Chiropractic Association (MCA) and the Michigan Chiropractic Society (MCS) have taken a major step forward to unify the two associations.
According to Christophe Dean, DC, MCS president, and Sam Caruso, DC, MCA president, the two associations are preparing documents for each board to consider, which include financial and membership information. Board votes will be taken on June 1, at a special joint board meeting. The merger will become effective upon member ratification.
MCA and MCS have collaborated successfully in the past, most notably on the recent scope of practice legislation and in legal actions against discriminatory insurance practices.
Although the two groups shared many areas, they also had differences that had to be overcome. Among them, according to the two association presidents, were legal and legislative agendas, the make up of the new board, how to transition, staffing of the new association, and personalities.
Dean and Caruso added that the new group, which will be called the Michigan Association of Chiropractors (MAC), will work on updating the state’s practice act and will continue to pursue insurance companies for their discriminatory patterns.
Approximately 1,500 out of 2,700 chiropractors in the state belong to these two associations.
