TCC to dedicate educational facility

Texas Chiropractic College will dedicate its newest educational facility on Friday, April 7, 2006, in a ceremony beginning at 2 pm. Following the ceremony, which is open to the public, a reception will take place in the lobby of the building with tours of the facility provided.

The 35,180-square-foot building houses a 750-seat auditorium, 45 faculty offices, a secretarial suite, a large chemistry laboratory, and an assessment center. The new assessment center, at 4,000 square feet, is a training center designed to enhance the training of doctors of chiropractic.

Eight simulated exam/treatment rooms make up the center’s core. Each room will contain typical furnishings and equipment found in most doctors’ offices. In these rooms, students will encounter standardized patients who are community members engaged to portray specific medical and psychosocial conditions. Student encounters with these “patients” will be used as a tool to both learn and evaluate clinical skills.

TCC’s assessment center features an integrated digital audiovisual system that records student/patient encounters, which may be reviewed by both faculty and students. These recorded patient encounters will be stored on a secure server allowing students and faculty to review the material for both learning and evaluation purposes. This system will also allow evaluators to add written comments and complete checklists that will further enhance the feedback to students on their performance.

The new center will also have several support areas such as a waiting area for students, changing rooms with lockers for patients, rooms for conference and consultation, and an observation hall around the perimeter of the assessment rooms to allow for live, but private observation of student patient encounters by evaluators.
