Law would prevent Medicare reimbursement reduction

Several House Ways and Means Committee members have indicated that they plan to pass legislation that would prevent a reduction in Medicare reimbursement rates in 2007, according to Congress Daily.

Under the current formula (Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate), reimbursement rates for physicians will decrease by almost 5 percent in FY 2007 and by a total of 37 percent over the next nine fiscal years.

Under the proposed legislation, physicians may have to participate in a voluntary system to report information on the quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries.

Congress Daily also reported that the American Medical Association has begun lobbying for revisions to the Medicare reimbursement formula.
