June 2006
DC emergency-response training set for September
Hurricane season started June 1, and in an effort to involve chiropractors in disaster relief, chiropractors are invited to participate in a formal disaster training relief program, Chiropractic Emergency Response Volunteer Team (CERV).
An eight-hour orientation CERV training program will be held Sept. 17, in Dallas, according to CERV President, Rebecca Burton, DC. The training will provide a basic overview of a disaster as well as protocols and procedures necessary used in a deployment situation.
Later, a 24-hour basic training program will be provided. The basic course will introduce basic triage protocols and transport procedures. The course will also provide an in-depth understanding of on-site protocols for all situations, including following a chain of command and a basic understanding of military protocol.
Instruction will also cover the medico-legal issues as well as documentation requirements in a fast-paced treatment arena.
Chiropractors who sit through orientation and basic training and successfully pass an independent standardized test will become certified under the CERB program and will be classified as a first responder in a disaster situation.
The formation of the CERV program was first announced in April 2006. (See www.ChiroEco.com, “Infrastructure built for DC emergency response team.”) Burton was ran the rehab/chiropractic unit for evacuees at the Dallas Convention Center, following Hurricane Katrina in 2006.
CERV has received endorsements from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association (PCA), and the Congress of State Chiropractic Associations (COCSA).
More information on CERV is available on its Web site, www.ihelpcerv.org.
