Northwestern launches rewards program
Northwestern Health Sciences University will launch the HealthyU Wellness Rewards Program — designed to help employees improve their health and wellness — beginning in January.
The program will reward employees already engaging in healthy lifestyle behaviors, and will support and encourage those who may wish to make changes.
Employees who complete eight of 14 criteria between Jan. 1, 2007, and Oct. 31, 2007, and submit the required documentation, will receive a financial contribution of $100 to their healthcare reimbursement accounts.
Among the 14 criteria are:
- Completing age-appropriate physical exams and screenings;
- Exercising 12 times a month during eight of the 10 months of the program;
- Participating in spring and fall wellness incentive campaigns;
- Keeping a food diary;
- Participating in mindfulness activities for 20 minutes at least once per month;
- Participating in Northwestern’s annual benefits and wellness fair;
- Attending three seminars on campus;
- Having an annual dental or vision exam;
- Utilizing a natural healthcare provider;
- Being tobacco free or participating in a tobacco cessation program;
- Engaging a family member in a healthy lifestyle;
- Donating blood or time to a charity;
- Using an alternative way to get to work two times a month; and
- Doing a monthly self-exam for breast and/or testicular cancer.
The purpose of the program is to encourage employees to make positive lifestyle choices, which in turn could help reduce high healthcare premium increases in the future.
In addition to the lifestyle behavior criteria, Northwestern is offering employees free small-group and one-on-one coaching based on the results of a health risk assessment administered this fall to all employees seeking insurance through the university.
