Northwestern profs become DCs to racing team
Two Northwestern Health Sciences University faculty members are the official doctors of chiropractic for the Country Joe Racing automobile racing team. The team competes throughout the United States in the American Speed Association, which is a lower level of NASCAR racing.
Rob Scott, DC, dean of Northwestern College of Chiropractic, and David Stude, DC, associate professor, will be providing chiropractic services to Country Joe Racing’s drivers and pit crews of about a dozen people.
After conducting initial evaluations in the Bloomington Natural Care Center over the next several weeks, Drs. Stude and Scott will set up an onsite clinic at Country Joe Racing’s Lakeville, Minn., headquarters.
After the onsite clinic is established, the doctors will initially visit two times per week, and may travel with the drivers to national racing events.
The partnership between Northwestern and Country Joe Racing was formed because Joe Miller, owner and president of Country Joe Racing, recognized that chiropractic could help improve the performance of their racing team. Human performance is the primary variable in automobile racing. Reflex speed, endurance and other human performance factors help determine who wins or loses a race.
Driving a high-performance racing automobile places stress on the body. Drivers often experience a number of symptoms that can be aided by chiropractic care, including low back pain. However, Stude and Scott will not just be treating symptoms.
“Our goal will be to provide team members with a comprehensive, natural healthcare management plan,” says Stude. “The manual chiropractic adjustment will be the primary treatment utilized, but specific soft tissue therapies, functional exercise, traction, physiological therapeutics and nutrition will also be utilized to positively improve human performance. We are hoping to make a difference for their team.”
Stude and Scott will be volunteering their time and expertise for the Country Joe team in exchange for increased public relations for chiropractic and natural health care.
“Providing care to Country Joe Racing will help build awareness of the benefits of chiropractic and natural health care for race car drivers, fans, and anyone else exposed to this arena,” says Stude.
“This is a great opportunity. I am happy and honored to be working for Minnesota’s number one racing team.”
