Northwestern researchers write popular article

An article written by Northwestern Health Sciences University faculty was recently one of the top downloaded articles from Science Direct, the world’s largest electronic collection of science, technology and medicine full text and bibliographic information.

The article was published in The Spine Journal in May 2004.The lead author of the article was Gert Bronfort, DC, PhD, director of the University’s Neck and Back Research Program.

Other authors were Roni Evans, DC, MS, director of Northwestern’s Wolfe-Harris Center for Clinical Studies; Lex M. Bouter, PhD, director of the Institute for Research in Extramural Medicine at Vreje University; and Mitchell Haas, DC, MS, from Western States Chiropractic College.

The article was entitled “Efficacy of Spinal Manipulation and Mobilization for Low Back Pain and Neck Pain: A Systematic Review and Best Evidence Synthesis.”

The Spine Journal, the official journal of the North American Spine Society, is an international and multidisciplinary journal that publishes original, peer-reviewed articles on research and treatment related to the spine and spine care, including basic science and clinical investigations.

“The fact that this is one of the most frequently accessed articles in a major, peer-reviewed journal is exciting for several reasons,” said Evans. “It demonstrates that researchers from chiropractic backgrounds have been able to generate scientific work that is recognized for its quality by the general healthcare community. It also shows that the work we are doing is relevant to a range of health-care professionals dealing with spinal related conditions”

Northwestern Health Sciences University offers a wide array of choices in natural healthcare education including chiropractic, Oriental medicine, acupuncture, therapeutic massage, human biology, and integrative health and wellness. The University has nearly 1,000 students on a 25-acre campus in Bloomington, Minn.
