Readers’ Digest cites chiropractic as alternative care
Readers’ Digest, reputedly one of the most well-read magazines published in the United States, pointed to chiropractic as a popular alternative treatment for back pain. Chiropractic headed up a sidebar on alternative treatments and was mentioned in the main article, “End Your Back Pain,” in the March 2005 issue.
The article discussed the problems Americans have with back pain and emphasized that they — especially baby boomers — want a quick fix to the painful problem.
The sidebar on chiropractic read, in part, “Chiropractic care, the most popular nonsurgical back therapy, is booming, with 60,000 chiropractors practicing today. Some happy clients visit their chiropractors more often than their hair stylists.”
The article went on to say that “experts generally agree that the treatment … is safe for the lower back. In a review of data, Dr. Dan Cherkin, of the Center for Health Studies in Seattle, found that chiropractic care provides modest benefits equivalent to those of conventional treatments.”
The sidebar also discussed massage and acupuncture therapies.
