WFC/ACC propose education conference in Mexico

The World Federation of Chiropractors and the Association of Chiropractic Colleges are proposing a joint conference to explore the role of chiropractic education in creating a common chiropractic identity. The conference will be in October or November 2006.

The purpose of the 2006 meeting will be to examine the various elements of the identity statements developed through a 2005 survey of chiropractors and determine if the statements are appropriate and consistent with current chiropractic education internationally.

In June 2005 the WFC member national associations reached agreement on what the WFC should recommend as the most appropriate public identity for the chiropractic profession in all countries.

Among other things, the recommended identity statement said that doctors of chiropractic:

  • Are spinal healthcare experts;
  • Have the ability to improve the function in the neuromusculoskeletal system and overall health, wellbeing, and quality of life;
  • Use a specialized approach to examine, diagnose, and treat, based on research and clinical evidence and with particular emphasis on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system;
  • Do not use drugs and surgery; and
  • Provide spinal adjustment, manipulation, and other manual treatments, exercise instruction, and patient education.

The proposed meeting will be a technical conference on chiropractic education targeted at faculty members from chiropractic colleges, together with representatives from other chiropractic organizations with a particular interest in chiropractic education.
