NBCE to assist doctors displaced by hurricanes
The board of directors of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) has voted to provide emergency testing services at no charge to practicing doctors of chiropractic who have been displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and are now seeking licensure in another state.
At the request of Rick Murphree, NBCE vice president and district V director (District V covers four of the five states hardest hit by the two unprecedented disasters), NBCE President Peter Ferguson called for the meeting to seek board approval of a plan to:
• Allow examination of active, licensed doctors in the affected states without charge, and
• Consider special testing arrangements as may be appropriately provided.
Any licensed practicing chiropractor from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, or Texas who wishes to obtain a license in another state in order to continue his or her practice may contact the state licensing board where he or she wishes to practice to obtain their licensing requirements.
If licensing entails taking an NBCE exam, the chiropractor must contact the National Board at 800-964-6223 (Processing Department) or 800-887-4320; by e-mail at elliott@nbce.org; or by mail at 901 54th Avenue, Greeley, Colo. 80634.
To be eligible for special testing arrangements at no charge, doctors must contact the National Board by Nov. 30, 2005.
Since most states require either all four parts of the NBCE exams or the post-licensure Special Purposes Examination for Chiropractic (SPEC) to obtain a license by reciprocity or endorsement cases, and since state boards may not have the flexibility to put aside those requirements, the NBCE is offering to shorten time frames and waive exam fees for those practitioners adversely affected by the hurricanes.
