2 Michigan associations preparing to merge
Two more chiropractic associations have begun unification talks. The Michigan Chiropractic Association (MCA) and the Michigan Chiropractic Society (MCS) have begun negotiations to join the two associations.
MCS President Dr. Christophe Dean and MCA President Dr. Sam Caruso have appointed members to a “unification steering committee” that will develop the process that should lead to the merger.
Dean referred to a trend of several chiropractic associations merging in other states as “a wildfire sweeping over the country. In each state where chiropractors have overcome their differences and united, they have made leaps of progress after coming together.”
Caruso added, “It always surprised me that Michigan has two different associations representing chiropractic. We have the chance to more than double our strength by joining together.”
In a recent survey of MCA and MCS members, nine out of 10 MCA and MCS members were in favor of a merger. Said one survey respondent, “Nothing could be more appropriate than for these two groups to merge. It's about time.”
MCA and MCS have collaborated successfully in the past, most notably on the recent scope of practice legislation and in legal actions against discriminatory insurance practices. A merger will create a single, more influential association that better serves chiropractic doctors, patients and the profession as a whole. Progress of the merger will be reported as it occurs.
