California bill does not protect h.s. athletes, CRN says
The Council for Responsible Nutrition (www.crnusa.org) has come out against a bill in the California Assembly that would require high school athletes to pledge to use three dietary supplements.
According to CRN’s position statement, the dietary supplements include ephedrine alkaloids, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and synephrine (bitter orange). The position statement says, “With a simple amendment — changing ‘dietary supplements’ to ‘performance-enhancing substances,’ CRN could support the bill. However, in its current form, SB 35 does not appropriately solve the problem it sets out to address. … In its current form, SB 37 creates the misimpression that dietary supplements are the problem when they are not. … The vast majority of dietary supplements are beneficial and safe.”
The organization is urging the bill to be defeated or to be amended.
