November 2005
Steroid Awareness Week in New Jersey
Acting New Jersey Governor Richard J. Codey has proclaimed November 27 through December 3, 2005, as Steroid Awareness Week across the state.
Steroid use among children is increasing across the nation. Last year, 3.4 percent of high school seniors said they used steroids at least once, and according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control, steroid use among teen athletes has more than doubled over the last decade.
Research has shown that the use of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs has profoundly harmful effects on the physical and mental health of teens.
The documented health risks of steroid use include, among others, the increased chance of suffering a heart attack or stroke, of developing liver and other cancers, and of triggering mood and hormonal imbalances.
New Jersey has established a governor’s task force on steroid use and prevention to combat steroid use before it becomes a public health crisis. The National Coalition for the Advancement of Drug-Free Athletics, Inc. (NCADFA), a New Jersey based nonprofit organization, has launched a “Choose NOT to Use” campaign to bring awareness and attention to the issue of performance enhancing drug use in sports.
