Parker students intern in Mexico

Seven Parker College of Chiropractic students recently began an 11-week stint with the school’s Clinic Abroad program at the Universidad Estatal del Valle de Ecatepec (UNEVE), located in the northeast section of Mexico City.

The first group of Parker students to travel to Mexico under the auspices of the Clinic Abroad program, these individuals will develop their chiropractic skills by serving as interns in the public clinic. The program also includes daily language classes and cultural studies. It also provides Parker College the opportunity to work cooperatively with the Mexican government on healthcare issues and the development of the chiropractic profession.

Parker’s Clinic Abroad program is the first of its kind among U.S. chiropractic schools, according to Dr. Fabrizio Mancini, president of Parker College. Participating students must be currently enrolled at Parker College and completing their last trimester of study in the Parker chiropractic degree program. During the last trimester at Parker, students typically complete their clinical requirements. Under the guidance of the Parker Clinic Abroad director, Dr. Juan Sanchez, Parker students will serve as interns at the public hospital on the UNEVE campus to complete those requirements.

Following a morning of treating patients, the students will receive Spanish instruction. Upon successful completion of the Clinic Abroad program, the students will have completed their required clinic hours to earn their doctor of chiropractic degree from Parker College and will have also completed 200 hours of Spanish instruction. The students will graduate with their class at Parker College in August on the Parker campus.

The Universidad Estatal del Valle de Ecatepac opened in September 2001 and is the first chiropractic program established in a Spanish-speaking country. Funded by the Mexican government, the UNEVE chiropractic program consists of 12 trimesters (5,900 hours), as required by the Ministry of Education in the State of Mexico.

Students must have completed the equivalent of the first two years of college to be accepted into the school. Upon successful completion of the program, UNEVE students will graduate with a licenciatura, which is equivalent to a doctor of chiropractic degree.

Criteria used for the selection of Parker students for the Clinic Abroad Program include academic standing; references including one from a Parker Clinic doctor and a Parker academic professor; a personal interview; and a written essay. Students interested in applying for the September 2005 Clinic Abroad class should contact the Office of the Dean of Chiropractic Wellness Clinics, (214) 902-2452.
