DOT proposes national registry of medical examiners
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is proposing a new program that will certify medical examiners who will then be listed on the proposed National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME).
Medical examiners include doctors of medicine, doctors of osteopathy, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, and doctors of chiropractic.
This program is designed to produce trained certified medical examiners who can examine truck and motor coach drivers and effectively determine their physical qualifications to operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). If the proposed NRCME program is established, FMCSA will require all interstate CMV drivers to obtain their medical certificates from a medical examiner listed on the proposed NRCME.
FMCSA will hold several public meetings and conferences regarding the proposed NRCME. The first public meeting will be June 22, 2005, at the Crystal City Marriott, 1999 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, Va. 22202. All attendees will have an opportunity to discuss this initiative with FMCSA personnel. For more information, visit www.nrcme.fmcsa.dot.gov.
