Congress may amend Medicare payment formula

Two bills have been introduced into the House and the Senate that would replace the existing formula for calculating Medicare’s physician payments. The bills would block the proposed 4.3 percent cut in Medicare for 2006.

According to the American Chiropractic Association, Rep. Nancy L. Johnson (R-Conn.), chair of the Health Subcommittee on Ways and Means, has submitted a bill that would replace the existing formula for calculating Medicare’s physician payments with a system that links payments to quality — a pay for performance plan.

In the Senate, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Finance Committee chair, has introduced a similar bill.

ACA Executive Vice President Garrett Cuneo reported that ACA is currently evaluating both the Johnson and the Grassley bills for direct impact on the chiropractic profession.
