CMS releases new HIPAA rule advice

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released paper six in its educational series on the HIPAA security rule. “Basics of Risk Analysis and Risk Management” covers implementation specifications and ways to conduct assessments.

The seven-paper series explains specific requirements of the rule, the thought process behind the new requirements, and ways to address the provisions.

Previously released papers included a rule overview, safeguards, and documentation requirements. The seventh and final paper in the series will deal with the implementation of the security rule for small provider organizations.

The six educational papers released to date are available at www.cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2.
