April 2005
Coalition converges on nation’s capital
A number of top legislative leaders spoke to and listened to hundreds of chiropractors, students, family members and staff of the Chiropractic Coalition on April 14 during the coalition’s 2005 Legislative Day. The Chiropractic Coalition is comprised of the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), the World Chiropractic Alliance (WCA) and the Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations (FSCO).
Legislators who spoke included Nevada Senator and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid; Utah Senator Orin Hatch; Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy; South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint; California Representative Bob Filner; and New Hampshire Representative Jeb Bradley.
“To have national leaders as influential as Senator Kennedy and Senator Hatch in the room at the same time to speak to chiropractors is a very exciting achievement for the Chiropractic Coalition,” said ICA Legislative Committee Chairman Michael S. McLean, DC.
In his address to the coalition, Rep. Bradley discussed HR 1594, Chiropractic Health Parity for Military Retirees and Dependents Act, which was recently introduced to Congress. The act would provide reasonable direct access to quality chiropractic services in the federal Tricare Program for military dependents and retirees.
Sen. Kennedy spoke about his support for military commissions for doctors of chiropractic and his support for the coalition’s Tricare initiative.
Rep. Filner has introduced HR 917, which would provide for direct access to chiropractic care for veterans. The bill would also authorize “periodic and preventative chiropractic examinations and services.”
