Backpack safety program available to DCs

April is national backpack safety month. Chiropractors throughout the country can contact the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA) for information on participating in the national awareness program.

Launched in 2002, the program is designed to educate students, parents and teachers about the health issues associated with heavy backpacks and to teach ways to carry backpacks correctly to prevent injury.

In the past, 31 state chiropractic associations and 350 chiropractors have participated in the program. The backpack safety awareness kit, available for purchase through COCSA, contains all the materials needed to organize and conduct a successful event.

Although the program can be executed year-round, National Backpack Safety Month occurs in April. According to Jerry DeGrado, DC, chairperson of Backpack Safety Awareness Committee, “Educating students and parents in the month of April gives us an opportunity to plant the seeds of knowledge to influence better decisions during the following school year to purchase ergonomic backpacks.”
