California supplement bill defeated
A bill that would have required mandated reporting of adverse effects for dietary supplements was defeated in the California Assembly.
The bill would have mandated the reporting of all adverse events for dietary supplements (except for those exempted products) and charged the industry a fee for the on-going costs associated with the program. In addition, it was estimated that there would have been a start-up cost of approximately $250,000 to be borne by the state.
According to opponents of the bill, including the Council for Responsible Nutrition and the American Herbal Products Association, the bill would have duplicated federal legislation efforts currently underway.
