SCUHS celebrates 93rd anniversary
Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier, Calif., home to Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC) and the College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (CAOM) is celebrating its 93rd anniversary.
The school was chartered on October 18, 1911. In 2000, it evolved into SCU and in 2001, CAOM was created.
“We’re extremely proud of our success to date,” says Dr. Reed B. Phillips, president, “with over 8,000 graduates who have practiced their skills around the world, it’s our vision to keep our tradition of excellence moving forward to meet the needs of not only future students, but a more demanding healthcare consumer as well.”
SCU owns two health centers that are open to the public. One is on its campus in Whittier and the other is in Pasadena. These facilities offer a variety of services, including chiropractic, acupuncture and oriental medicine, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation, plus massage therapy.
“As alternative healthcare has gained widespread acceptance,” says Phillips, “we’ve found more people willing to integrate it with their traditional medical care. With that, everyone benefits, discovering the very best treatments for each diagnosis.”
LACC originated in Los Angeles and moved to Glendale in 1950. The campus was relocated to the former Lowell High School site in Whittier in 1981. “This location has proved to be a huge advantage for the recruitment of students from all over the country and world,” says Phillips. “Close enough to L.A. and its attractions, yet far enough removed to offer a quiet, residential environment that makes for a popular combination of studies and socializing.”
SCU student and staff are active in the community. They participate as treatment volunteers for AIDS and breast cancer fundraising projects, at local health centers on other college campuses and by sponsoring the annual “Spring Into Health” fair and 5K run.
The school currently has more than 700 students and staff members.
