Palmer researchers honored

Two researchers at the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) recently were honored by prestigious health organizations. Monica Smith, DC, PhD, associate professor at PCCR, received the K01 Research Scientist Development Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Palmer Vice President for Research William Meeker, DC, MPH, has been appointed to the ad hoc Chiropractic Work Group subcommittee of the Chiropractic Advisory Committee for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Smith’s NIH award is to further her research training and to develop collaborative research in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)-related health services and health economics.

In connection with the grant, she has also been accepted into the post-doctoral and mid-career Research Fellowship Training Program at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), where she will be relocating for the duration of the program while maintaining her affiliation with Palmer College of Chiropractic.

She will be working closely with research fellows and investigators at the UCSF Institute for Health Policy Studies, the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine and the Center for Health Professions, among others.

Smith is only the second chiropractic professional to receive a K training award from the NIH. The first was Eric Hurwitz, DC, PhD, University of California Los Angeles.

Meeker has accepted an appointment to the ad hoc Chiropractic Work Group, a subcommittee of the Chiropractic Advisory Committee for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Committee members will advise the Veterans Administration (VA) on an agenda for chiropractic research in the VA. The work will consist of reading reports, making recommendations in a series of conference calls and participating in a meeting in Washington in 2005. The committee includes representatives from many different health care disciplines as well as NIH officers.
