Northwestern donates equipment to Project CURE
Northwestern Health Sciences University is donating outdated equipment to Project CURE, a humanitarian relief organization that delivers medical supplies and equipment to the poor and sick living in Third World countries.
Becky Peterson, MLA, a Northwestern instructor, coordinated the effort to collect equipment no longer needed by the university. Peterson and colleague Jane Richardson, MEd, assistant professor, collected equipment from the clinical pathology and microbiology labs valued at more than $32,000.
"[The equipment is] outdated as far as technology here in the United States, but many Third World communities are using equipment from the 1960s and '70s," says Peterson.
According to Project CURE, more than 1.2 billion people live on less than $1.10 day and cannot afford health care. Even the most basic supplies such as needles, suture and sterile gloves are not available.
