Las Vegas symposium addresses neurological pain
LAS VEGAS — Four second-generation leaders within the chiropractic profession shared their expertise and insights into neurological pain at the 2004 Symposium on Neurological and Other Causes of Low Back Pain in Las Vegas November 20-21.
The symposium brought together approximately 150 chiropractors who earned 15 CEUs, offered through Southern California University of Health Sciences and National University of Health Sciences.
Presenters at the conference were Terry R. Yochum, DC, DACBR, who also acted as the symposium’s master of ceremonies; Rand Swenson, DC, MD, PhD; James M. Cox, DC, CACBR; and Mark Sanna, DC, CCRD. All are second-generation chiropractors.
Yochum, professor of radiology for the Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier, Calif., and an instructor in skeletal radiology for the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, is the co-author of the text Essentials of Skeletal Radiology, which is required reading in all chiropractic colleges. His presentation was entitled “A New Update on Imaging of the Lumbar Spine” and covered using radiography to identify a number of different types of disorders. He also updated the audience on radiographic methodology.
Swenson, a PhD researcher and a practicing medical neurologist, began his career as a chiropractor. He currently is a practicing neurologist in New Hampshire and is currently the Associate Professor of Medicine (Neurology) and Anatomy at Dartmouth Medical School. Swenson spoke on “Neurologic Evaluation of the Patient with Lower Back Pain.”
Cox, speaking on “Lumbar Spine: Biomechanics, Diagnosis and Treatment Using Cox® Distraction Decompression Adjusting,” told the audience, “The driving engine in our profession will be systematic research.” He explained, “While there is nothing wrong with high velocity thrusts, they are not right for all patients.” His research has identified criteria for using various chiropractic techniques.
Sanna is the CEO of Breakthrough Coaching. His presentation was entitled, “Systematize Your Practice: The Key to Revolutionizing Healthcare.”
The symposium was sponsored by VeridianHealth (www.veridianhealth.com), an onsite electrodiagnostic (EDX) testing company headquartered in Deerfield, Ill. VeridianHealth is the parent company of Diagnostic Testing Centers of America (DTCA), First Diagnostics and FirsTherapy Plus.
