South African chiropractors visit NUHS

A group of chiropractic leaders from South Africa’s two chiropractic educational programs in Johannesburg and Durbin toured the clinic system at National University of Health Sciences to garner new ideas that they could implement in their own university clinics.

The group included Dr. Bridget Bromfield, president of the Chiropractic Association of South Africa; professor Mavis Arthur, head of the chiropractic program in Johannesburg; Dr. Mario Milani, chair of the South African Allied Health Professions Council (South Africa’s chiropractic governing body); Dr. Kendrah Da Silva, director of the internship program in Johannesburg; and Dr. Charmaine Koporaal, academic director of clinical services in Durbin.

The group arrived in Chicago after visiting the National Chiropractic Board of Examiners in Colorado and one other chiropractic college. “We are considering starting our own National Board, so the visit to your NCBE was very helpful,” says Milani.

“The major difference between American programs and ours is that our academic program is tiered with a bachelor and master’s degree before the doctoral degree, taking a full six years to complete,” observed Dr. Milani.

President James Winterstein. “Our South African counterparts share National’s keen interest in maintaining high academic and clinical standards for our profession. We’re happy to be a part of that.”
