Demand for weight-control products to rise

BUSINESS WIRE — If you have been hesitant to take on nutrition and weight-management with your patients, you may be missing an opportunity. U.S. demand for weight control products and services will advance 6.7 percent annually to nearly $21 billion in 2008, according to market research conducted by The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industrial market research firm.

The weight-loss market will account for larger and faster expanding revenues based on a larger customer base, greater pricing flexibility and a wider range of products and services. In 2008, Freedonia’s research shows that obese and overweight individuals will account for nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population, up from about 60 percent in 2003. Over the same period, the value of weight loss products and services consumed by these individuals will increase 7.5 percent annually to $11.6 billion.
