Life West gives free osteoporosis screenings
Local residents took advantage
of free osteoporosis screenings at Life Chiropractic College
West Health Center. This community outreach program was developed
to help educate the public about the importance of osteoporosis
screening and introduce another piece of state-of-the-art
technology to the Life West Health Center.
The machine used was the MediTech
Osteometer DTX-200, which uses x-ray absorptometry technology
to estimate the bone mineral content and density in the distal
section of the forearm.
The scan takes three minutes
and delivers a low dose of radiation. The x-ray signal registered
at the detector is inversely proportional to the bone mineral
content and density of the forearm, with fewer x-rays detected
when more bone is present and more detected when bone mass
is low. The unit is linked to a computer that automatically
calculates the bone mineral content and density.
After each screening, the patients
were able to review their results immediately, receive lifestyle
recommendations and were given information on osteoporosis
and its prevention.
Life Chiropractic College West
operates a public health center, through which more than 1,500
patients a week receive subsidized healthcare.
