NBCE makes donations to legal fund, FCER

The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) Board of Directors voted at its April meeting to make an additional contribution of $25,000 to the National Chiropractic Legal Action Committee (NCLAC) of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) as well as a $50,000 donation to the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research.

The $25,000 contribution was made specifically to help defray legal expenses in the American Chiropractic Association’s lawsuits against Trigon Blue Shield reimbursement practices and the Health Care Financing Administration's (HFCA) Medicare Part C regulations. Over the past six months, the NBCE has contributed $100,000 to the NCLAC.

In announcing this latest grant, NBCE President Dr. Peter Ferguson commented, "Upon recommendation of the Foundation and Executive Committees, the NBCE Board of Directors has chosen to continue to support the ACA's heavy burden of legal fees in this case. The outcome of these lawsuits is critical to the entire profession. A successful resolution will provide opportunities for current and future practitioners to deliver chiropractic health care to our patients."

The $50,000 donation to FCER will go toward research projects to benefit the profession.

Although the National Board receives many requests for financial assistance, each is evaluated for its potential to positively impact the profession. At the March 2004 American Chiropractic College conference in Las Vegas, FCER Director of Research and Education Dr. Anthony Rosner spoke persuasively about the benefits of research.

Following the conference, Ferguson expressed the National Board's interest in furthering research in chiropractic. "Good research secures the future of the profession-it keeps the chiropractic profession strong and opens up more opportunities for students. The past work of the FCER demonstrates the worthiness of their research projects,"
