Man arrested for exposing wireless security flaw

A computer hacker who exposed a lack of security in healthcare records management was arrested in Raleigh, N.C.

According to a report on Raleigh television station WRAL, Clayton Taylor Dillard, a 29-year-old information security consultant, wanted to demonstrate the ease of breaking into the computer network at Wake Internal Medicine Consultants Inc. The TV report said he accessed copies of checks and insurance forms with patient names and procedures. His motivation was to demonstrate the laxity of the medical center’s computer system. (For complete story, see www.wral.com/news/2465963/detail.html.)

The risks and benefits of wireless networking relative to HIPAA privacy regulations were addressed in “Unwinding the mysteries of wireless security,” in Chiropractic Economics, Issue 10, Aug. 18, 2003 (available online at www.chiroeco.com/article/2003/issue10/).
