More HIPAA Rules Finalized

The final Rule adopting HIPAA standards for the security of electronic health information was published in the Federal Register on February 20, 2003. This final rule specifies a series of administrative, technical, and physical security procedures for covered entities to use to assure the confidentiality of electronic protected health information.

The standards are delineated into either required or addressable implementation specifications. The 289-page rule works hand in hand with the HIPAA privacy standard, compliance. While the privacy rule sets standards for how protected health information can be used and when it can be disclosed, the security standards define administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information. The entire regulation can be downloaded at www.cms.gov.
