New Tri-C program offers scholarships for improving health and wellness

CLEVELAND (PRNewswire) – Cuyahoga Community College is now offering students the opportunity to improve their health and receive a scholarship for participating in a wellness program. Invest Well is a unique program that allows students the opportunity to create a Personal Wellness Portfolio by exploring the six dimensions of wellness and for making investments in their health and well-being.

In addition to achieving a healthy lifestyle, students who complete the program are eligible to win scholarships towards tuition and books.

This new program, started in the fall, awarded three recipients a $500 scholarship for use this spring. Since a credit costs only $66.30, students can cover nearly eight credit hours of classes. The more than 250 students who participated in this first offering found they had increased energy, decreased stress and exclusive access to a comprehensive, on-line health publication called, "Desktop Wellness." Participants also receive a certificate of achievement to include in their portfolio. Students choose from six dimensions of programs covering spiritual, mental/emotional, social, occupational, intellectual and physical wellness.

Many employers in the Cleveland area encourage employees to participate in wellness programs because of the huge benefits a healthy workforce can have on the financial health of an organization. They are passing this on to students.

For many companies medical costs can consume half of corporate profits or more. Promoting worksite health programs is a major long-term step for keeping employees well. Worksites now realize that healthy employees have fewer absences, increased morale, are more productive, and play a role in controlling health care costs. Having the skills necessary to manage stress, balance work/home demands, and practice behaviors for a healthy lifestyle are important attributes for future employees.
