Acupuncture test committee convenes

The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) convened the inaugural meeting of the NBCE Acupuncture Test Committee late last year to develop and select questions for exams to be administered in March and November 2003.

Dr. Lawrence Gerstein, Chair of the NBCE’s Acupuncture Committee stated, “I observed a very enthusiastic and dedicated committee of professionals working together to select two strong examinations for this inaugural year. The chiropractic community can feel proud to have a quality assessment of acupuncture for practitioners.”

The Acupuncture Exam will be offered along with other NBCE written exams at 20 chiropractic colleges. Not all chiropractic colleges offer coursework in acupuncture and where acupuncture is offered, it is an elective course. Therefore the Acupuncture Exam will be elective for examinees.

To prepare for the meeting, the NBCE staff conducted a Delphi Study of acupuncture programs at chiropractic colleges that teach relevant courses to ensure that test content reflected college curricula. Questions available for selection at the test committee meeting were obtained from faculty who teach acupuncture, state licensing boards and subject matter experts in the field.

In addition to selecting acupuncture exams for 2003, the test committee members participated in a process to recommend an appropriate passing score for the exams. Scores from the Acupuncture Exam may be utilized by any state that allows chiropractors to practice acupuncture, either as a part of the chiropractic license or as a separate certification.
