NYCC launches acupuncture degree programs

The New York Chiropractic College of Seneca Falls, NY, has been approved to establish upstate New York’s first Master of Science programs in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. NYCC has amended its charter to reflect the new programs and will now offer coursework leading to degrees of Masters of Science with majors in Acupuncture and Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, as well as the Bachelor of Professional Studies degree with a major in Life Sciences. These are in addition to its long-standing Doctor of Chiropractic degree program.

Graduates from either Masters degree program will fulfill a requirements for eligibility to take state licensure exams for the practice of acupuncture.

Acupuncture is an ancient healing art that has enjoyed a resurgence of interest as scientific research continues to confirm its health benefits, according to NYCC. The therapeutic procedure involves the insertion of fine gold or silver needles into the body’s acupoints and rotating them. Electrical signals (electro-acupuncture) may be used instead of manual stimulation, particularly for relief of pain and neurological disorders.

Research funded by grants from the United States National Institutes of Health have confirmed the existence of acupuncture points and have identified specific parts of the brain that activate when particular acupoints are stimulated. In one study, for example, scientists at the University of California at Irvine demonstrated excitation of the brain’s occipital lobe when sight-related acupuncture points located on test subjects’ feet were stimulated, just as though the person’s eye were being stimulated by light.

NYCC will immediately start to process applications for enrollment in its new programs, which are scheduled to begin in September 2003. The bachelor’s program, which is available to students who qualify for admission into either the chiropractic or acupuncture programs, will begin to enroll students in January 2003.
