TCCs research head to teach CAM at Rice
The acting chairperson and director of Texas Chiropractic Colleges Department of Pathology will be co-instructing a new course in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to be offered at Rice University in Houston.
Dr. James Giordano, who is head of research at TCC, has worked with faculty and staff from other major medical institutions in the Houston area on developing the course, entitled Complementary and Alternative Medicine: An Integrative Model.
According to the course developers, An estimated 42 percent of Americans use some form of complementary or alternative medicine to try to improve their well being. The popularity of alternative medical practices such as nutritional counseling, acupuncture, meditation, stress management, chiropractic therapy, massage and other therapies has created a $27 billion per year industry. Mainstream medical providers are taking note.
The Houston group of educators and researchers anticipates that this course can be incorporated into mainstream medical education and would also expand the boundaries of academic education.
