You Say DC, I Say CP

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska Board of Chiropractic Examiners has the right to identify doctors of chiropractic as chiropractic physicians, Nebraska Attorney General Don Stenberg has ruled.

In his written opinion, Stenberg stated that “because Nebraska statutes are ambiguous, it is within the authority of the Board of Chiropractic to resolve this ambiguity and to authorize chiropractors to identify themselves as chiropractic physicians. However, all signs, announcements, stationery and advertisements must include the word 'chiropractor' in addition to any other lawfully recognized terminology.”

The legal topic was one of several regulations that came up for approval at a state Board of Health meeting earlier this fall, said Marla Augustine, spokeswoman for the Nebraska Board of Chiropractic Examiners. The state of Wyoming made an earlier ruling that a chiropractor licensed to practice in Wyoming does not violate the Medical Practice Act by using the term “chiropractic physician.”

“They can now choose which they prefer to be called doctors of chiropractic or chiropractic physicians,” Augustine said. “It’s a matter of language.”
