More Americans relax with massage

The number of adult Americans who reported getting one or more massages from a massage therapist in the past year is steadily increasing. In 2002, 18 percent reported receiving a massage, compared to 8 percent in 1997 and 17 percent in 2001, according to a survey conducted for the American Massage Therapy Association®.

Although 23 percent of adults who got a massage within the last five years did so for relaxation or stress reduction, most (53 percent) received their last massage for other health reasons.

The survey said that of the 14 percent who spoke to their healthcare providers about massage therapy, 30 percent were recommended to massage by their physicians and 27 percent by their chiropractors.
