Editor’s Note: What follows is an open letter from Kent Greenawalt of Foot Levelers, Inc., to the chiropractic profession.

UPDATE: Foot Levelers, Inc., announced on Sept. 25 that the deadline for the Red Cross matching program had been extended from Sept. 24 to Oct. 1. The extension was given at the request of many doctors who had fund-raising
activities going on at health fairs/events the previous weekend and were unable to get their checks in by the deadline. As of Sept. 24, Foot Levelers had received approximately $180,000 in chiropractic donations (before the company's pledged 100% matching) - quite close to the goal of $200,000. Over 1,000 individuals or groups from the chiropractic community had donated as of Sept. 24. Look for a final update on this website (and in Chiropractic Economics' November issue).

Dear Doctor:
It's difficult to put into words the feelings experienced in these recent hours. I personally have gone through all the various phases of emotion: sorrow, grief, anger, frustration, and disbelief.

More than any other health-care professional, chiropractors have chosen this specific path in life because of life, because of wholeness, because of healing. Chiropractors care.

The anguish we feel is doubly experienced - the terrible intentional infliction of pain and death goes against every moral fiber of our profession. It's a violation of what we stand for, no matter who you are. Chiropractors share this bond.

As most of you know, Foot Levelers believes strongly in chiropractic. Most of our giving has been supporting our fine profession in one way or another. But today, we must reach out to those who are going through such dark hours.

Foot Levelers is setting up a matching donation campaign to the American Red Cross. Every dollar that you donate through Foot Levelers will be matched penny for penny (up to $200,000). Our goal is to raise $400,000 total. To become part of this humanitarian effort, here's what you can do.

Your donation must be received no later than Sept. 24, 2001. As you know, time is of the essence. Many people need help now!
