Chiropractor Cleared in Woman's Death

LANSING, MICH. - A chiropractic physician did not have a duty to refer a patient to a "qualified medical practitioner" for a heart condition that led to her death, the Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled.

The court also ruled that a chiropractor in the state of Michigan does not have a duty to recognize and diagnose cardiac symptoms. The decision marked a victory for John R. O'Connor, DC, of the O'Connor Chiropractic Clinic in Livonia, Mich., who was sued for wrongful death and medical malpractice Teresa Braford died in 1994 shortly after being released from his care.
