ICA’s upper cervical care council marked a success
October 1, 2008 — On August 22 and 23, Life Chiropractic College West hosted a historic meeting of representatives of six leading upper cervical techniques, Life West’s faculty, and International Chiropractic Association board director, Dr. Gary Walseman. The group convened to form ICA’s first Council on Upper Cervical Care.
The main purpose of the event was to create a curriculum for a diplomate program which will affect the advanced education and training of persons not only in the technical applications of a given upper cervical technique but in the nuances of various approaches to the correction of atlas subluxations.
In order to develop standard courses of study, the council had to reach an agreement regarding the exploration, discussion, teaching, and researching of topics central to upper cervical chiropractic care.

Dr. Shawn Dill, director of the Institute for Advanced Care in Chiropractic at Life West, was named chair of the Council on Upper Cervical Care.
The careful formation and successful meeting of the Council is an auspicious start, according to Dr. Dill. “The support of the various technique groups and their desire to work in a unified effort provides great hope for the future of upper cervical specific and the profession as a whole,” he said. Having identified and discussed the major issues facing upper cervical care, the next step includes the implementation of feedback, the revision of enabling documents, refining the diplomate program syllabus, and developing the Council’s administrative infrastructure.
