Chiropractic is one piece of the wellness puzzle

Wellness PuzzleScan the shelves at any pharmacy and you’re likely to find hundreds of pills promising to cure your sickness. Then look at the state of health in the United States and you’ll see that those pills aren’t making anyone well. People are taking more medication today than at any other time in history, but ironically are the unhealthiest they’ve ever been. The reason is simple; health doesn’t come with a prescription. True health is a result of balancing the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of your life—also known as wellness.

Wellness is an active process of making healthy choices over time to create a more fulfilling, successful lifestyle. It is not a quick-fix or a fad. It is about finding a balance that works for you so that you can live to your fullest potential.

Moving towards a state of wellness begins with a conscious decision to become accountable for yourself. Once you realize you have the power to control your thoughts and actions, you can begin to use that power to make the right choices that will lead you towards creating a healthy lifestyle. Remember, wellness is not something that can be achieved for you—only by you.

If you’re uncertain how to begin your journey to wellness, a good place to start is with your physical body. A healthy body is essential to becoming and staying well, because without it, you aren’t able to develop the other areas of your life. It is important to know that no matter what physical state you are currently in, it’s never too late to start. You can reach a state of optimal physical health through eating well, getting plenty of exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, getting proper sleep, avoiding harmful habits, and through regular chiropractic care.

Chiropractic is, and always has been, about helping people live healthier, fuller lives. Chiropractors focus on the nervous system, which controls all other systems in your body, such as respiratory, digestive, muscular, and immune. The best use for chiropractic care is to keep the nervous system healthy and functioning at an optimal level so it can keep all your other systems healthy, which prevents you from becoming sick in the first place.

Everyday wear-and-tear on your body can create slight misalignments in your spine, which can block and disrupt nerve flow so the nervous system can’t properly communicate with the rest of your body. When this happens, your brain isn’t able to tell your body how to keep itself healthy, which is why you get sick. Because this is a physical problem, it needs a physical solution. Chiropractors are trained to locate and correct these misalignments to restore normal flow of nerve energy, allowing your body to heal itself as it was designed to do.

As the president of Parker College of Chiropractic, located in Dallas, Texas, I have the honor of contributing to the future of wellness through the education of our students. At Parker College, we integrate the wellness philosophy into our curriculum to prepare our future doctors of chiropractic to be a leader in the health care profession and an expert

in wellness.

The real benefits of chiropractic care come from incorporating it into your overall wellness lifestyle. Other ways you can improve your physical health is by:
* Eating balanced meals and getting proper nutrition
* Exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight
* Visiting your dentist and optometrist
* Limiting or avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and other substances
* Receiving regular massages to relieve muscle tension and increase circulation

As I mentioned earlier, a healthy body is only one component to wellness. A sound mind is just as important in achieving your wellness goals.

Emotional wellness is a state of stability that comes from being comfortable with your own feelings, accepting your limitations, adapting to change, coping with stress, and enjoying life despite its imperfections. To achieve emotional wellness, it is important to:
* Recognize how and when emotions affect your body
* Express your needs, feelings, and opinions appropriately
* Be optimistic about your life
* Believe in yourself and your abilities

Social wellness is the ability to relate well with others and have a sincere concern for humanity as a whole. It gives you the confidence to be outgoing, friendly, and affectionate towards others. To achieve social wellness, you should:
* Develop meaningful, healthy relationships
* Interact well with others in public and private settings
* Feel comfortable in various social settings
* Maintain your sense of self when surrounded by others

Spiritual wellness is a search for meaning and purpose in life that gives you a sense of direction, awareness, and peace.
* Examine your values—respect, honesty, human life, family, education, religion, health, wealth, diversity
* Develop a philosophy that you strive to live by every day
* Feel connected to yourself and others

The life-changing power of wellness is a concept that my fellow chiropractors and I have been passionate about for many years. Parker Seminars, an entity of Parker College, is the largest gathering of chiropractic professionals anywhere in the world, and we come together to learn new ways to bring better health to our patients through chiropractic wellness.

For the first time ever, we are inviting the community to join Parker Seminars for a brand-new heath and wellness event, September 25-27, 2008, at the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington, Texas. Attendees will learn the fundamentals of healthy living from some of today’s leading wellness experts who will reveal ways to make simple changes to their lifestyle that will help them reach their wellness goals and be the healthiest they can be.

The exciting thing about wellness is that it is a life-long journey. You have endless opportunities to learn more about yourself and how to make the right choices for your lifestyle. When all these areas of your life come together, there is no limit to what you can achieve!
