House passes bill repealing medicare withholding law
The House of Representatives passed a bill that would repeal a requirement that government agencies withhold federal taxes from payments to contractors, including Medicare providers. The House passed the measure, H.R 674, by a bipartisan vote of 405-16. H.R. 674 is aimed at repealing the law requiring the federal government, as well as state and local governments, to withhold three
percent of most payments made to all government contractors including Medicare providers. That rule is scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, 2013. The repeal has gained bipartisan support in Congress, and the Obama administration has also endorsed it. The measure now goes to the Senate, where consideration is expected to take place soon.
